What to do with that Wall Space?!

My roommate and I have our new place completely furnished—furniture, curtains, tables, appliances, etc. But what about that darn wall space? We thought about just getting cool paintings, but then we voted against that because we wanted to be “more innovative” then that. That being said, I’ve been looking around for some wall spaceideas that aren’t too overwhelming, quick and easy to manage, and go with the rest of our place!

Use your old antique books as shelves!

This is a great idea for any wall in the house, but probably for a smaller space. Having shelves made out of books ( I recommend using old, antique books for a cooler look—plus you get to go antique shopping!) They are easy to mount, all you need are the simple shelving pieces and a few screws. You can space them out however you’d like, but I like how they staggered the shelves in this picture. I think this would be a great idea for an entry way or a bathroom—I plan on mounting these above our towel rack in our bathroom!

Especially for those of you who are like me—this is a great solution to all of those tiny nik-naks that you can never find a home for. Or maybe for your office supplies—pens, scissors, sewing tools, etc. The best part about this project is that (besides for the shelving pieces) you might be able to complete this for free!

Another great space-condensing project that has a light and simple look to it is this great hanging frame system with clips for notes, letters, photos, etc . This can be totally customized to tailor any theme or personality that you have in your home! All you need are a couple of frames, (old-school antique are of course my favorite) some ribbon, and a glue gun or really strong wood/tacky glue.

This is also a great project for the kids to help out with! I friend of mine did this with magnets on the back of her frame, so it hung from her fridge. From there, she clipped recipes, kids’ schedules, report cards, shopping lists, etc. and her kids loved adding and looking at this wonderful craft!

Especially now that it is going into the fall season, keep these fun DIY projects in mind for when you’re stuck inside because the wind is blowing too hard. :)

Don’t forget to check through the internet or the Sunday paper for craft store coupons and manufactuer’s coupons that you can use for all your projects! I know that the cost of doing projects like these can really add up. And unless you’re selling what you’re making, you really notice what they are doing to your wallet!
