Mason jars might just be my new best friend. For kitchen utensils, dry ingredients, candles, bathroom toiletries, office supplies—these guys (both small and large) are a GREAT solution to have around the house. You can just buy the big bulk pack of 12 jars or so in most grocery stores or craft stores. WinCo has 12 packs of different sizes and styles for something cheap like eight bucks!
A great addition to your window sill, a bookshelf, coffee table, kitchen counter—mason jars can go anywhere! I love them because there is such a demand for old, antique-style home decor right now, and these are such a cheap and simple way to grab an old, country-style home.
Moving into my new house, I found that I am drawn towards types of storage units, organizing supplies and tools, and space fillers. Mason jars fit all three of these! The cool thing about them is that you can totally dress them up and make them look more extravagant, or keep them dressed down in their simple form and they still look awesome.
For my window sill, I decided to make some sleeves for my jars to add a little personal touch. Because twine and twill is so inexpensive and easy to find, I went with these two textiles and did a little hot glueing and wrapping. The final product is awesome! It looks really innovative, but it’s nothing too extravagant at all.
For my bathroom, I also have an old, country-style theme that is simple—lots of white and old wood. I knew mason jars for decor would be the perfect thing, so I started off with a soap dispenser. First I took a smaller jar with a lid, drilled a hole in the top large enough to fit a pump, but small enough to keep it snug, and poured soap inside the jar! It was incredibly easy and now I have compliments on it all the time. It looks like I just bought it from an antique shop or something.
Now, I told y’all how much I appreciate small storage units for any room in the house, and the pantry was something that I had my eye on! I have a lot of dry products—oats, cereal, flour, sugar, beans, noodles, loose-leaf tea, etc.—so I thought jars would be the perfect idea for my groceries. It looks really cool too! This setup also always encourages me to buy bulk and stay away from all the packaging, which I really do feel much better about.
In addition to all these cool mason jar ideas, I also did some very practical decorating as well. Tea light holders, plain decor, pens and supplies caddies, a toothbrush holder, even a dish scrubber! I put one up in the upstairs bathroom on the counter for makeup brushes, combs/brushes, etc. I know it sounds like my place is just exploding with jars, but they are so discrete, (and even hidden in cupboards and shelves) that they blend well into your interior decor.
After all this decorating and space filling, don’t forget about the most obvious use for mason jars! Drinking glasses! You can still find the kind with the handle, and they are a great addition to your glassware. If you aren’t looking for an entire case of jars, but just a handful, try thrift shopping! I found a ton of different sized jars at Goodwill for only 99¢!
I believe that, even if you feel incapable of trendy home design, once you start collecting cool items like mason jars and other antique items, over time your mind will start to create wonderful ideas! As always, there are a TON of blogs on the web, just dedicated to mason jars! You’d be really surprised by what use they can be.
Enjoy!
